Many travelers have only recently discovered the beauty and uniqueness of Tulum, Mexico. Located about 2 hours south of Cancun, Tulum is a small town with a boho-chic and beachy style. It’s becoming a more popular destination thanks to instagram influencers. What was once a sleepy little town has now become a popular place for celebrities, hippies, and spiritual types.
Tulum offers a much different experience than what most people are used to when they travel to the Yucatan side of Mexico. Before you plan a trip to Tulum, it’s important for you to understand what it is, and what it isn’t. Sure, those instagram photos are amazing, but actually being there and staying in Tulum might not be your cup of tea. Read on to learn why Tulum, Mexico, is such a different experience.
The overall vibe in Tulum is best suited for relaxed and go with the flow type of people. Tulum is known for having a spiritual or health focus, with yoga classes, cooking classes, art, and plenty of beach lounging. It’s a great place for solo travelers to go and make friends or for a unique place for a group of friends to gather, or for a honeymoon or couple’s getaway.
Many also do not realize that most of Tulum is run on generators. It’s literally off the grid. Some hotels in Tulum do not offer Wi-Fi or even AC during the day, so if that’s a must for you, it’s best to check into that before you book. Plus, because of the draw of celebrities and instagram influencers, staying in Tulum can also have a hefty price tag.
However, don’t think that it’s all quiet and chill the entire time. There are a lot of nightclubs that get very lively and loud into the night. Many hotels have a lot of nightlife with different music genres you can choose from. If you want to be a beach bum during the day and party at night, Tulum is a great option for you.
Tulum has two main areas. “Beach Tulum” and “Tulum Town”.
It goes without saying that staying at the beach is going to be more expensive than staying in town. The beach is where most of the trendy restaurants are and where most of the nightlife is. Also note that while the beach is technically public, each resort carves up their portion of the beach, so you have to be a guest in order to access it.
Many of the beach hotels have beach clubs that you can pay a fee to enjoy during the day. This gives you access to their pools and beach. Each one offers something different, so it’s best to look into what suits your needs best.
Staying in Tulum Town is where the locals live and where you’ll find more authentic restaurants and a more authentic Mexican vibe. Hotel options tend to be more affordable in town and most offer pools, just no beach. You can rent bicycles or take a taxi to get yourself down to the beach to enjoy one of the many beach clubs or nightclubs.
While other areas of the Riviera Maya have a plethora of large all inclusive resorts that offer tons of amenities and entertainment, you won’t find all of that here. Tulum has more boutique type accommodations that feel more rustic, bohemian, and relaxed.
Some notable and popular lodging options include some of these properties below:
Ahau Tulum is a popular place for travelers to recharge in rustic luxury. Twenty-four bungalows line the beach while also offering nightly air conditioning. There is also an onsite restaurant serving Mexican-Caribbean flavors and fresh, organic ingredients. It’s also the home of the famous Ven a La Luz, a towering wooden sculpture by Daniel Popper. You’ll often see a line of people waiting to take a selfie in front of it.
Casa Malca is perhaps the most elegant hotel you can find in Tulum. This sprawling 71-room-mansion features many pieces of art to discover. Each room is uniquely decorated, and there is a large beach area. You can even unwind like its former owner, Pablo Escobar, with onsite spas and restaurants.
This hotel is a quirky, artsy, and eco-friendly haven. There is no wifi or electricity at Azulik. They have some of the most interesting tree hut suites raised on platforms high above the beach along with pools, hot tubs and patio swings. Whether you stay here as a guest, or stop by for a meal, Azulik should definitely be added to your Tulum itinerary.
Be Tulum is a super-stylish, beachfront, spa resort with two pools. Some suites have private plunge pools, indoor copper tubs, roof top solariums/terraces with pools, private gardens/pools, and small kitchens. There are also two restaurants on site with a raw food bar, beach bar, yoga studio, meditation classes, and a spa.
La Valise offers a perfect beach and jungle getaway. With a heated infinity pool this is a great luxury hotel option. Guests ages 12+ can experience bougie accommodations overlooking the beach with Wi-Fi and breakfast included. These rustic jungle bungalows have open air showers and terraces with jungle views.
You can’t visit the Riviera Maya without exploring the natural attractions. One of the most popular are the gorgeous cenotes, or natural underwater caves. There are several you can visit in the area.
Another option is visiting El Castillo, or “the Castle,” which helped to establish Tulum as a bustling post-classical seaport. It appears to have used a previous building as its foundation, complete with serpent designs.
A visit to Tulum isn’t complete without visiting the Mayan Ruins. Known as Zama by the Mayans, the Tulum ruins are a must see. My good friend Jose with Mayan Routes can set you up with a group or private tour through the Tulum ruins. You can also pair a trip to Coba, cenotes, and a Mayan Village.
Temple of the Descending God. This one is so old we aren’t even sure who they were. Luckily, researchers have it down to two primary candidates for the title of top God. This deity could be Ah Muzen Cab, the God of bees. These specific bees were stingless and made honey a popular commodity.
