Planning a Universal Orlando Resort vacation can feel overwhelming, especially now that there is more to experience than ever before. With four theme parks, immersive resorts, Universal CityWalk, and the addition of Universal Epic Universe, there is enough to fill an entire vacation.
Here are answers to some of the most common questions travelers have when planning a Universal Orlando getaway.
How Many Theme Parks Are at Universal Orlando?
Universal Orlando Resort now has four theme parks:
- Universal Studios Florida
- Universal Islands of Adventure
- Universal Volcano Bay
- Universal Epic Universe
Epic Universe is Universal Orlando’s newest theme park and adds an entirely new collection of immersive worlds, attractions, dining and entertainment to the resort.
What Is the Difference Between Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe?
Each Universal Orlando theme park offers a very different experience.
Universal Studios Florida puts you right in the middle of some of your favorite movies, television shows and stories. Here, guests can experience attractions inspired by franchises including Despicable Me, TRANSFORMERS, The Mummy and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.
Universal Islands of Adventure is especially popular with thrill-seekers and families looking for adventure. The park features themed areas including Marvel Super Hero Island, Toon Lagoon, Skull Island, Jurassic Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade and Seuss Landing.
Universal Epic Universe takes immersion to another level. The park is made up of five worlds:
- Celestial Park
- SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Dark Universe
- How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Guests enter through Celestial Park before traveling through portals into the other themed worlds.
Universal Volcano Bay is Universal Orlando’s water theme park, featuring thrilling water attractions, relaxing rivers, beaches and tropical surroundings.
What Is Universal CityWalk?
Universal CityWalk is Universal Orlando’s dining, shopping and entertainment district.
Located alongside Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, CityWalk is a great place to grab dinner after a day in the parks, enjoy drinks, shop for Universal merchandise or catch a movie at Universal Cinemark.
You’ll find everything from quick-service restaurants to full-service dining and nightlife.
Does Universal Offer Vacation Packages?
Yes. Universal Orlando offers customizable vacation packages that may include accommodations, theme park tickets and other vacation components.
Depending on the package and how your trip is booked, additional options such as airfare, transportation, travel protection and special experiences may also be available.
A vacation package can be especially helpful now that Universal Orlando has four parks because the right combination of hotel, tickets and park days can make a significant difference in how smoothly your vacation runs.
How Many Days Do I Need at Universal Orlando?
This depends on what you want to experience, but Universal Orlando is no longer just a quick two-park getaway.
With four theme parks, Universal CityWalk and multiple resort hotels, I recommend allowing several days if you want to experience the resort without rushing.
For travelers who want to visit all four parks, five to seven days can provide a much more comfortable vacation. This allows you to dedicate time to each park while still leaving room to revisit favorite attractions, enjoy your resort pool or simply relax.
Epic Universe alone can easily deserve a full day, particularly for first-time visitors.
What Types of Tickets Does Universal Orlando Offer?
Universal Orlando offers a variety of ticket options, including single-day and multi-day tickets.
You’ll generally see both Base and Park-to-Park options.
A Base ticket allows you to visit the eligible park or parks according to the terms of your ticket, while Park-to-Park tickets offer more flexibility to move between participating parks.
Current multi-day Park-to-Park ticket options can include Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay and Epic Universe, depending on the ticket purchased.
Because ticket products and promotions can change, choosing the right ticket should be based on how many days you have, which parks you want to visit and whether riding the Hogwarts Express is important to you.
What Is Universal Express Pass?
Universal Express allows guests to skip the regular lines at participating rides and attractions, potentially allowing you to experience much more during your park day.
Express Pass options are available for Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, although participating attractions and the type of Express available can vary.
One of the most valuable benefits of staying at select Universal hotels is complimentary Universal Express Unlimited.
Guests staying at:
- Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
- Hard Rock Hotel
- Loews Royal Pacific Resort
receive Universal Express Unlimited for participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure with valid theme park admission.
An important distinction: the complimentary hotel Express benefit does not automatically include Epic Universe. Epic Universe Express products are available separately.
Does Universal Orlando Offer a Dining Plan?
Universal Orlando no longer offers the traditional Quick-Service and Full-Service Dining Plans that were available in the past.
Instead, guests can purchase meals throughout Universal’s theme parks, resorts and CityWalk. Universal also periodically offers vacation promotions that include dining credits or dining cards.
There are hundreds of dining options throughout Universal Orlando, ranging from quick-service meals and themed snacks to full-service restaurants.
Reservations are recommended for some of the more popular table-service restaurants.
Which Parks Have Harry Potter Attractions?
There are now three Wizarding World of Harry Potter areas at Universal Orlando.
Universal Studios Florida
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley
Here you can explore Diagon Alley, visit shops from the Wizarding World and experience Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.
Universal Islands of Adventure
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade
Walk through Hogsmeade, see Hogwarts Castle and experience attractions including Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
Universal Epic Universe
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
This newest Wizarding World combines the streets of wizarding Paris inspired by the Fantastic Beasts films with the British Ministry of Magic.
Its headline attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, takes guests into the Ministry for an adventure involving Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dolores Umbridge.
Can I Ride the Hogwarts Express?
Yes!
The Hogwarts Express is both an attraction and transportation between:
Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida
and
Hogsmeade at Universal Islands of Adventure
To ride the Hogwarts Express, you need valid Park-to-Park admission that allows access to both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on the same day.
A one-park ticket will not allow you to ride the Hogwarts Express between the two parks.
The experience is also different depending on which direction you travel, so Harry Potter fans may want to ride it both ways.
Is Epic Universe Connected to the Other Universal Parks?
Epic Universe is part of Universal Orlando Resort, but it is located on a separate campus from Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk.
Universal provides transportation options for resort guests and between areas of the resort.
Because of its location and the amount there is to experience inside the park, I generally recommend planning Epic Universe as its own dedicated park day rather than trying to squeeze it into a few hours.
What Is Child Swap?
Universal’s Child Swap program is extremely helpful for families traveling with young children or children who do not want to experience a particular attraction.
Your family can enter the attraction queue together. Before boarding, one adult waits with the child in a designated Child Swap area while the rest of the party rides.
Once the first group finishes, the adults can switch so the person who waited with the child can experience the attraction without having to start over in the regular queue.
Child Swap is available at many attractions throughout Universal Orlando Resort.
Is It Worth Staying at a Universal Orlando Hotel?
For many families, absolutely.
Universal Orlando hotel guests can receive benefits that may include:
- Early Park Admission to select parks on select days
- Complimentary transportation around Universal Orlando Resort
- Convenient access to the parks
- Resort charging privileges and other onsite benefits
Guests staying at select Signature Collection hotels can also receive complimentary Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
With Epic Universe now part of Universal Orlando, staying onsite can make transportation and overall vacation logistics significantly easier.
Ready to Plan Your Universal Orlando Vacation?
Universal Orlando has transformed into a destination that can easily fill an entire vacation. Whether you want to explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, race through SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, encounter classic monsters in Dark Universe, spend the day riding coasters or relax at Volcano Bay, there is now more to experience than ever before.
The key is choosing the right hotel, ticket type and number of park days for the way you want to travel.
Instead of spending hours trying to figure out which combination makes the most sense, I can help you put together a Universal Orlando vacation designed around your travel dates, priorities and must-do experiences.
